SUMMARY:The Legalization of Marijuana in Canada and the Future of Cannabis Law in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that on October 17\, 2018 the personal use of marijuana in every province of Canada will be legal? Adults in Canada will be able to buy cannabis from government and privately run retail stores across the country and online. Did you know that the largest cannabis company in the world is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and has a market capitalization of over $10 Billion? Canadian cannabis companies not only dominate the TSX\, but are starting to expand into the United States (with some significant caveats) and internationally. Meanwhile if you were to drive from California to Chicago\, you could cross through states where cannabis is fully legal\, partially legal and totally prohibited. \nCome join Gordon Cameron\, from the Canadian law firm of Stikeman Elliott LLP\, and Matthew Kittay\, from the US law firm of Fox Rothschild LLP\, as they explore the Canadian framework for legalized marijuana and the burgeoning domestic and international market for Canadian cannabis as well the patchwork of laws and regulations in the United States\, including an understanding of the US federal government’s ever evolving approach to marijuana regulation. \nGordon Cameron is a principal of Stikeman’s New York office. His practice is focused primarily in the areas of Canadian corporate and securities law\, with a particular emphasis on cross-border mergers and acquisitions\, private equity transactions\, corporate finance (including public offerings and private placements) and other cross-border matters. He is actively involved in advising US cannabis companies on Canadian exchange listings and other cross-border corporate and securities matters. He advised certain shareholders of Bedrocan Canada in the Canopy Growth/Bedrocan merger\, one of the first public M&A transactions in the Canadian cannabis industry. \nMatthew Kittay is a partner and VC Practice Leader at Fox Rothschild. He handles a wide array of corporate matters\, with a particular focus on: private company mergers and acquisitions\, venture capital and private equity financing for technology\, life sciences and cannabis companies. Matthew is an active leader with the American Bar Association Business Law Section\, co-chairing the PE/VC Committee’s Angel Venture Capital Subcommittee and serving as the M&A Technology Subcommittee’s Liaison to the Legal Analytics Committee. He is actively engaged in New York’s venture capital community as an attorney and angel investor\, and has advised for and published with city\, national and international venture capital educational and accelerator programs. Matthew is also leader in his firm’s Cannabis Law Group: a national team of skilled and experienced attorneys to assist cannabis businesses at every step. \n
